I love Maggie Gyllenhaal. I may as well start there. Sometimes I wonder at her choices, but I always like her. This movie was rough. I can't say it was bad, because it wasn't. However, the subject matter, was just painful. She plays a woman recently released from prison, who comes back to try to have a relationship with her young daughter who has been living with her brother and his wife while she was gone. She is a recovering addict, and has clearly had a rough past. It was just hard to watch. I liked it, thought everyone was great in it....but it was really super sad. Not in the, someone died kind of way....but just generally sad. I felt sorry for her, and then I didn't...then I wanted to help her, and then I didn't. I had mixed emotions throughout the entire movie, but overall. I thought she gave an amazing performance and I would recommend this movie based on that alone.
Don't watch it if you are looking for a feel-good romantic comedy though....this is not that movie!
